Culture Add vs. Culture Fit: Why the Language You Use in Hiring Matters

Culture fit is one of the most well-intentioned and most dangerous phrases in hiring because when organizations hire for fit, they tend to hire people who look, think, and communicate like the people already in the room, and they call it alignment when what they are actually doing is narrowing the range of perspectives available to them. Culture add asks a fundamentally different question: what does this person bring that we do not already have, and how will that make us stronger? The organizations that grow with real intention are the ones that hire for culture add, that build teams with the cognitive and experiential diversity to solve problems no single perspective could reach alone. The language you use in your hiring process is not a small thing; it is the architecture of the organization you are building, one hire at a time.
